Perversion: Theoretical and Clinical Approaches 6 Credit Hours
Presented by Margaret Jordan, Ph.D.
Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute
900 Lovett Boulevard [Map]
Houston, TX 77006
Tuesday evenings, October 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2008
7:30 - 9:00 PM
Far from being limited to the paraphilias, perversion is manifest in many clinical and societal situations. From sadomasochistic dynamics in relationships to sexual abuse, and from pornography to propaganda and tyranny, perversion can be seen not only in the character structures of individuals, but also in widespread cultural phenomena. In this course we will survey psychoanalytic perspectives on perversion spanning most of the last century, and we will discuss the diagnosis of perverse character traits and dynamics, as well as treatment implications. Readings will include the work of Freud, Khan, Meltzer, Chasseguet-Smirgel, Benjamin, McDougall, and Ogden. Seminar discussions will be based on readings and case vignettes.
Due to the importance of reading for the first seminar session, enrollment will close on September 30, 2008. Readings for the first meeting will be mailed to participants.
